Most pregnant women will agree that when their bump is noticeable, everyone around them has an opinion about the size of the baby. As if all the discomfort and anxiety is not good enough, you get tired of hearing baby bump comments on how big or how small it is – and then the worry sets in. Is the baby going to get bigger? Have I been eating too much? And the most important question – how will the baby arrive... C-Section or Normal? There’s actually no need to worry. Pregnancy bellies come in many different shapes and sizes. There are plenty of reasons why you appear to carrying a small or large baby – here are 7 of them:   Baby’s Position Babies are pretty active in the uterus. They move around and change position frequently, especially up to the end of the second trimester. During the last trimester, babies usually favour a head-down position, but can move their backs from one side to another, or even move into a posterior position (baby’s back against mother’s back). Your belly will change shape and size depending on the position your baby is in. You’re Running Out Of Room When you’re housing a baby, placenta, cord and fluid, your internal organs have to fit somewhere. As the uterus grows, the intestines can be pushed behind it, making your belly look very round and ‘all baby’. Or your intestines might move to the sides of your uterus, making your belly appear big and ‘to the sides’. Your Height If you’re tall and have a long abdomen, your baby has a lot of growing space. Your uterus will tend to grow upwards rather than push outwards. Result: your belly will look smaller. If you’re a shorter woman, there’s a smaller space between your hip and your lowest rib. That means less room for the baby to grow upwards, so your uterus will push outwards instead. Result: your bump will show earlier and look bigger. If You’re A First Time Mother-To-Be A woman having her first baby tends to have a more compact bump because the large abdominal muscles haven’t been stretched before. They are usually toned and tight, holding the baby snug and high. This can make you look smaller than you might expect at a given point in your pregnancy. Previous Pregnancies Alter Your Shape Pregnancy stretches the abdominal muscles so that the growing baby can be accommodated. In later pregnancy, your baby is producing the larger amount of amniotic fluid, mainly from lung secretions and urine output. So, depending on how pregnant you are, if you or your baby are producing plenty of fluid, your belly might alter in shape or size. Baby’s Size Okay, so it’s a bit obvious but you might actually be having a big or small baby. Genetics play an important part in the baby’s size. If both parents are tall, then the baby will probably have the same traits. If both are average size, the baby is more likely to be petite and not very long. Babies tend to be in the same weight range as their parents, too. So if you and your partner were about 9 lbs. at birth, you’re not likely to give birth to a tiny 6 lb. bundle. Birth order can also make a difference in how big your baby is likely to be. Subsequent babies tend to be larger at birth than their older siblings were. Boys are generally bigger at birth than girls as well … but guessing the gender of your baby from the size and shape of your belly is a whole other discussion! … The truth is, no-one can judge the size of your baby simply by looking at your belly – not even your doctor or midwife. As your body changes at each different stage of pregnancy, you can’t compare yourself with other women. Remember, every pregnancy is unique. Unless you have a medical condition, such as diabetes, or you’ve been suffering from severe and prolonged morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum), the size of your belly shouldn’t be a concern. Third trimester sleep: A distant memory!

Most women, who have been through pregnancy, find it troublesome to sleep during some stage of their pregnancy term. A good night’s sleep gradually becomes a distant memory as the mother moves closer to the date of delivery. Here is a guide on what to expect in terms of sleep during the third trimester of pregnancy. Trouble being Comfortable As you move closer to the end of your pregnancy term, getting sleep becomes a hazy memory. The baby bump just gets bigger and by the third trimester it’s big enough to not let you lie on the bed comfortably. Try sleeping on your left side with pillow fit between your knees and behind your back. If this doesn’t help, settle in a comfortable chair. When you are due by four to six weeks, you will realise that the best sleep that you get is when you sit up. Pressure on the Bladder Do you remember having spent more time in the bathroom than outside during the first trimester? Well, that phase will be back by the time you are approaching or are already in your last trimester. This time, however, it is the baby that is putting pressure on your bladder. To cut the number of trips you make to the loo, you may reduce the number of fluids you take, especially in the late afternoon so you can have a peaceful sleep at night. Heartburn When you are in the third trimester of pregnancy, you are likely to experience heartburn, leg cramps, snoring, restless leg syndrome and the baby’s kicking and squirming at night. Several studies have shown that pregnant women in their last trimester experience only few periods of deep sleep and are more likely to wake up in the middle of the night than they did before. It is during the third trimester that a pregnant woman’s sleep pattern takes a nose dive. Tips Once you have crossed the 28th week, it is advisable that you sleep on either side. Avoid lying flat on your back when you are beyond 28 weeks or in labour as the pressure of the womb that is carrying the baby, the amniotic acid and placenta may add strain on blood veins and block blood circulation to your brain and heart.  This may also lead to a decline in the blood pressure and thereby cause you to be dizzy apart from causing other negative impact on the baby and its heart pulse. Getting your baby into the right position for birth

If your baby is in a head-down position, with the back of his head slightly towards the front of your tummy (anterior position), your labour is likely to be shorter and easier. Most babies get into this position by the end of pregnancy. In an anterior position, your baby fits snugly into the curve of your pelvis. During labour, your baby will curl his back over, and tuck his chin into his chest. Your labour and birth should progress easily if your baby is in this position, because: During contractions, the top of your baby's head puts rounded and even pressure on the neck of your uterus (cervix). This helps your cervix to widen, and your body to produce the hormones you need for labour. During the pushing stage, your baby moves through your pelvis at an angle, so that the smallest area of his head comes first. Try putting on a tight polo neck without tucking in your chin and you'll understand how this works! When your baby gets to the bottom of your pelvis, he turns his head slightly, so that the widest part of his head is in the widest part of your pelvis. The back of his head can then slip underneath your pubic bone. As he is born, his face sweeps across the area between your vagina and back passage (perineum). Can I really make my baby get into the right position for birth? Adopting a hands-and-knees position for 10 minutes, twice a day, can help to move your baby into an anterior position in late pregnancy. This technique (OFP) is tried-and-tested. However, all doctors may not recommend OFP in pregnancy because of the lack of written evidence. Most doctors may still encourage you to try the positions during labour, as you may be more comfortable in them once your contractions start. You could try to stay in upright or forward postures regularly in every-day life, rather than for short bursts. But this might not affect how your baby lies at birth. How can I improve my baby's position during labour? If your baby is in a posterior position when labour starts, you can still use postures and movements to try and help your baby to turn and relieve your pain. It's common for posterior babies to change position during labour, and most get themselves into an anterior position by the pushing stage. You may feel slight niggling pains for several days before labour really starts. This can be tiring, but may be a sign that your baby is trying to turn into an anterior position. You may find that one of the best positions is on all fours. In this position, your baby drops away from your spine, helping to relieve backache and hopefully helping him to turn, too. Here are some tips for coping with pre-labour and early labour: Get plenty of rest at night. Vary your daytime activities from walking and moving around, to adopting all-fours or knees-to-chest positions. Knees –to-chest position is when you're on your knees with your head, shoulders and upper chest on the floor or mattress, with your bottom in the air. Lean forwards during contractions, and try pelvic rocking on a birth ball. Eat and drink regularly to keep your strength up and stay hydrated. Try to stay relaxed and positive. Gain weight the healthy way during your pregnancy

Weight gain during pregnancy is often a very delicate subject for most to-be moms. You want to make sure your baby is getting the right nutrition but you are also wondering how you will lose the baby weight once your child is born. It may also happen that your hormones going crazy may lead you to major cravings; and not always for healthy food, or completely killing your appetite. This may result in you going into a spree of eating more than you should and gaining way too many kilos or eating less than the required quantity. Some women even lose some weight during the first trimester due to the morning sickness but it is only for a very short duration. In case you have any doubts, you must check with your healthcare professional.   How much weight should you gain? The ideal weight to gain during pregnancy for a person of normal weight is 11-15 kg. Given 40 weeks of pregnancy, this would mean not more than 0.3 to 0.5 kg in a week. At the time of birth, an average Indian baby weighs anywhere between 2.5-2.8kgs. Apart from this, there are many other elements that make up for your body weight. These include the uterus (0.9 kgs), the placenta (0.5 kgs), breasts (0.4kgs), blood volume (1.2 kgs), amniotic fluid (2.6 kgs) and some extra fat (about 2.5 kgs).      Your BMI and pregnancy weight gain According to experts, women should aim for gaining weight based on their BMI: If your pre-pregnancy BMI was >18.5, you should gain 12-18 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was between 18.5 - 22.9, you should gain 11 - 16 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was between 23 - 25, you should gain 6 - 11 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was <25, you should gain 5 - 9 kgs.   Being Overweight and Pregnant For most women, gaining weight is easier said than done. There are a number of reasons why gaining excess weight during pregnancy is bad for both you and the baby. For you, it could lead to conditions like gestational hypertension, preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. It may also lead to your baby being born via cesarean section, a preterm baby or a baby born at a higher weight than normal (a big baby - macrosomia); which can lead to health risks like childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes for your baby. Don’t lose heart if you find yourself halfway through your pregnancy already having gained the entire recommended weight. It is not too late and you can still get things under control. The key is to focus on the weekly metric of 0.3-0.5 kg and try and stick to that. Gaining a lot of weight early on often makes pregnant women pessimistic and they stop making efforts to gain weight in a healthy way. This makes the situation worse and makes their weight gain go out of control. Here’s what you need to do if you’ve gained too much weight -  Regular Exercise- Get half an hour of gentle exercise in a day. It could be prenatal yoga, a walk in the park with your partner or a gentle swim. Even if you can’t get 30 minutes every day, a minimum of 10 minutes is critical. This will not only help you stay healthy for your baby and prevent various complications but also keep off those extra kilos. Do not crash diet - Going on a crash diet in order to lose the excess weight is even more harmful than gaining weight. Talk to your gynecologist and allow her to suggest the required dietary modifications. Take special care of your diet- If you can afford the services of a nutritionist that’s great; if not there are still several reliable resources online that will give you detailed advice on maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. Your doctor will also have some useful tips. Do try to maintain a healthy diet that is balanced and gives your baby the right nutrients. Also, remember that you only need 300 extra calories per day when you’re pregnant, so make sure you don’t go overboard trying to “eat for two people”.   Being Underweight during Pregnancy If you're eating the right amount of calories during pregnancy and you're not gaining enough weight fast enough, you need to think before eating. If you’ve lost your appetite, focus on consuming quality calories in small packages. Some good options include foods high in healthy fats, such as avocados and nuts, as well as higher-calorie grains and legumes. To make sure you are gaining the right amount of weight in a healthy way, here are some tips to keep in mind: Do not skip breakfast - Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you skip it, the chances of acidity and gas increase, which decreases your appetite and leads to other GI tract problems. Add healthy calories to your everyday diet - Grab a handful of nuts, healthy salads and avocados to your diet so that your body can gain the required weight. Eat after every 2 hours - Instead of eating 3 large meals, eat small portions every two hours so that they can be digested easily. You can have 3 main meals, along with a mid-morning snack and an evening snack. Take your supplements regularly - Do not miss your multivitamins and mineral supplements, since these are crucial for the development of your baby. Do not consume junk foods - Junk foods and processed foods may supply a lot of calories to your body but they have no nutrition and they contain various artificial sweeteners and other additives, which are harmful to your body. Remember, the bulk of your nourishment should come from whole foods. Since every woman is different and every pregnancy is unique, the kilos gained by every woman will vary. How your twins are developing at week 8

When you come to know that you are expecting twins or multiple babies, you are nervous and excited at the same time. By the time you complete two months of your pregnancy, the continued onslaught of nausea and morning sickness and the irritation will reduce and your belly will start showing. As you see your belly, you will start thinking about raising your kids and the different preparations you will have to do to make sure that your little ones are comfortable. All these preparations are necessary but you must not stress yourself instead take one step at a time. By 2 months of pregnancy, i.e 8 weeks, your tiny twins or multiples will undergo a significant development. Find out by 8 weeks how much your kids will have developed.  Baby Growth at 8 Weeks Around the 8th week of pregnancy, a lot of important organs and physical attributes of the babies start developing in a strong and consistent manner. The neural growth is the most important in this regard and the brain undergoes a substantial progress. The newly formed nerve cells that constitute the majority of the brain, start reaching out to each other and create numerous branches and connections.This is primarily what helps their brain function and the existence of such neural pathways contributes to it. The formation of eyes already begins a couple of weeks ago, however, it isn’t that evident. By the 8th week of pregnancy, eyelids begin to form in a translucent tissue-like material and begin to cover the eyes of your babies. The growth of limbs is substantial as well. Although the hands and arms are yet to develop completely, the flexing that occurs at the wrist is very much present and they are positioned closer to the heart. Their fingers also continue to grow. By the 8th week, their arms and legs develop and start bending as well too. Most babies tend to start showing a knee that can be recognized by a doctor in the scan. Certain babies have a larger feet growth, which can make the legs long enough to be bent in the front of the body. Size of the Babies at 8 Weeks If your twins or multiples were barely the size of a seed or a pea in the previous weeks, the growth in the 8th week will make them as large as a kidney bean. Most growth is only around a millimetre on a daily basis, which might not seem much, but is substantially large when compared to their overall size. Your twins or triplets will also start gaining some weight. Common Bodily Changes Most of the changes that occur in twins or triplets in the womb are internal, while their physical growth is slowly moving ahead at its own pace. However, a woman’s body will undergo many changes: If you are pregnant with twins or multiple babies, your waistline will expand. This may not be evident always, but wearing certain pants which fit you comfortably earlier, may feel constricted. The uterus will begin to increase in size in accordance with the growth of the babies. It may appear larger than an orange and would start pushing into the abdominal space and can be felt from within. These could even result in abdominal cramps and might hurt some women intermittently. The 2-month mark, in a way, also signals the breasts that they would have to be ready for the babies when the delivery comes through. By this time, your breasts also swell, and the areolas have small bumps around them as they morph in a nature to support lactation of the little ones. The blood levels in the body increase tremendously, and so do the levels of various hormones, particularly progesterone. These increased hormones further start aggravating the morning sickness symptoms, while a few women might see a reduction in them. The increased blood flow may or may not have enough blood cells in it, which could disturb the brain’s requirement and set in headaches at random times. Symptoms of Twin Pregnancy at 8 Weeks The signs of having twins or triplets at 8 weeks get very prominent and you can even celebrate it at the completion of two months if you haven’t done so already. Apart from that, there are tons of other symptoms that get evident at this stage of your journey. Morning sickness and constant nausea are common pregnancy symptoms, and you will experience it mostly in the first trimester of your pregnancy. But when expecting twins or multiple babies, you will have to bear these for some more time. Your hormones will be at the highest levels and their effect will be compounded as a result of multiple babies. If nausea is too severe for you, going for alternative aromas or eating food items that don’t have strong flavours could help you keep that under control. As mentioned above, aromas generally work to your benefit but sometimes it could even be the reason to set in nausea. This is primarily due to the fact that your olfactory senses level up and can spot a range of smells than before. Such a change is usually an evolutionary response in keeping yourself and your babies free from any foreign substances that could cause harm. The increased amount of blood, the extra pumping that your heart undertakes, the headaches, and the intensive tapping into nutrients can make you feel low on energy and a lost-out exhausted mood of sorts. This is pretty natural for women pregnant with twins or multiples. If your doctor has given the go-ahead to continue with sexual intercourse, there might be occasions when you spot a little bleeding in the vagina. The sensitivity of the cervix is the culprit here. Another strange sign that many women mention around this stage of the pregnancy is the occurrence of absurd dreams. Some might be ecstatic while others might cause you to wake up sweating. This is basically a result of the changes happening inside your body, and even if you have had a bad dream, there’s no reason to worry about it or be stressed and anxious. Belly at 8 Weeks Pregnant with Twins The belly continues to grow larger, a little faster in case of twins and multiples as compared to the usual pregnancies.
