Hormonal changes- When pregnant, your body produces more progesterone and estrogen. These hormonal changes impact how your brain processes information and emotions, which can disrupt sleep. Changes in REM cycle- As your pregnancy progresses, the amount of deep sleep you get decreases and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep increases. According to Dr. Sears, REM cycle affects your dreams because: This state of sleep encourages more dreams, because your brain is more active. Since you’re more aware of your environment and arouse from sleep more easily during REM cycles, you’re more likely to remember your dreams. 3. Stress- You’ve got a lot on your mind, mama! Stress is a natural part of pregnancy as you adjust to so many new changes, but it can lead to insomnia and interrupted sleep. Studies show that daily stress can affect our ability to get a good night’s sleep and that people who feel stressed report more frequent dreams. 4. Heightened emotions of pregnancy- There are a lot of reasons your emotions are heightened during pregnancy—after all, you’re bringing a new life into this world! Even if you’re not stressed or fearful, excitement can send your mind spinning in a million different directions. And research proves that lack of sleep compromises our brain’s ability to regulate emotions. Since dreams help us work through our emotions, you’re more likely to have more dreams when you feel overwhelmed. These parents are simply using their dreams to mentally sort out a huge life change.” Dreams about forgetting the baby The same sleep researcher found that expectant and new mothers commonly have dreams about forgetting or losing the baby, because new memories are organized and stored during sleep.These dreams don’t indicate anything about your ability to parent, they’re just a sign that your brain is still connecting all of the dots. Dreaming of your baby as an animal reflects your instinctual role as mama bear, and dreaming of yourself as an animal reflects your protective instincts. Dreams about love affairs with an ex or another partner These types of dreams don’t mean you have any desire or intention to be unfaithful. Much more likely, they’re a sign that you fear how your relationship with your partner may change once the baby is born. Are eclipses harmful during pregnancy?
In the Indian culture, a lunar or solar eclipse is considered to be harmful for a pregnant woman. It is also believed that if a pregnant woman goes out of her house during an eclipse, the development of her baby might be affected and he/she may be born with a mental or physical deformity. Although there is no evidence to prove this scientifically, but it isn’t possible to ignore the beliefs of our ancestors and take any risks. Pregnant women are forbidden to face the direct rays of the moon or the sun and so the best advice for them is to stay indoors. Many women argue that nothing is proven and that it doesn’t matter but there is definitely no harm in staying indoors for the sake of your child. Getting exposed to the direct rays of the moon or the sun might not necessarily cause a birth defect but it can certainly have an irreversible effect on your eyesight. Apart from staying indoors, there are many other myths regarding eclipses and pregnant women - Myth - Refrain from using any sharp objects such as a knife, needle or a scissors during the eclipse. This is so because it is believed that any wound that you get during this time takes more time to heal. Reality – Since there is no scientific proof of this, your wound will heal depending upon the time your blood takes to clot and nothing else! Myth - Do not eat or drink anything during the eclipse Reality - Staying without food or water for a long time can affect your health adversely and lead to stomach ache, headache, acidity, and fatigue. Myth - One should not touch their belly during the eclipse as it can give an ugly birthmark to the baby Reality – Birthmarks can be genetic or caused due to pigmentation and not due to an eclipse. Myth – It is essential to take a bath once the eclipse is over so that all negative energy can be warded off. Reality – Firstly an eclipse causes changes in the gravitational force of the earth and not any kind of energies and secondly, just taking a bath doesn’t help to remove negative energies! Myth - Some beliefs say that you need to take as much rest as possible while the eclipse is going on and some say that one should not sleep. Reality – Take rest if you need to. If the eclipse goes on for 4-6 hours, it can be very tiring to stay awake and it won’t always be possible to sleep that long if the eclipse takes place during the day time. Myth - All the food that was prepared before the eclipse started should be discarded. Reality – It might not be possible to do this if you’re packing yourself a lunch for the office! The one thing that you can do is to cover all the windows of your room with a thick newspaper or draw the curtains so that the rays of the sun or the moon cannot penetrate. During the first few weeks, newborn babies are asleep more than they are awake. A baby’s sleep needs are, on average, between 16 and 22 hours per 24-hour period. It varies a lot among babies, but it can also vary from day to day for the same baby. As a new parent, you might think that you’ve found a routine at the beginning. But it’s common that this changes frequently. The duration of your baby’s sleep periods can also change. On some days their waking and sleeping times are longer, and on other days your baby might sleep more but for shorter periods of time. Here are some facts related to baby's sleep: NEWBORN SLEEP PERIODS ARE SHORT A newborn baby usually sleeps around 18-20 hours a day. This sounds like a comfortable existence for new parents, doesn’t it? But then why do many new parents experience such a lack of sleep in the early days? It probably has to do with the duration of the sleep periods. A newborn sleeps for a while, is awake for a while and then falls asleep again. And it can be this way around the clock during the first few weeks. Eventually the baby will adapt to ‘our’ circadian rhythm, remaining awake for longer periods of time during the day and sleeping for several hours at night Just as with adults, a baby’s sleep is made up of different cycles of deep and light sleep. “A newborn does not sleep deeply all the time, but instead switches between sleeping deeply, being drowsy and sleeping lightly. In between, the baby is either awake and lively, alert and cranky, or screaming and crying.” FEELINGS OF HUNGER AND BEING FULL CONTROL HOW A NEWBORN SLEEP. In the first few weeks, food and sleep dominate the newborn’s world. Eating takes a lot of energy, making your baby tired and so making them fall asleep. A change usually takes place around 4-7 weeks, when your baby begins to become curious about its surroundings and may sometimes need to be soothed to fall asleep. NEWBORNS FOLLOW THEIR SLEEP RHYTHM FROM THE WOMB So much of everything that happens when a baby is born is cleverly designed by nature. But the fact that newborn babies have a different circadian rhythm than their parents is less ingenious. No one is really sure why. Newborns tend to stick with the sleep pattern they had in the womb, sometimes a week after birth, sometimes up to several months. Myth 4: If your baby sleeps in the car or during a stroll, it does not count. What matters is that your baby should have a sound sleep.
