What are the Top 10 Foods Every Woman Should Avoid During Her Pregnancy?

    Written on 14 August 2018

Pregnancy is one of the most crucial moments in a woman's life, and her diet plays an important role in the baby's well-being. It's a well-known fact that a mother's diet during pregnancy is very important to her baby's health.

During pregnancy, the diet must be balanced and nutritious, and the food items to eat and avoid during pregnancy should be kept in mind.

Here are some food items that women should avoid during pregnancy.

    • You should avoid raw and undercooked eggs because they can contain salmonella bacteria, which can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and death.

    • Avoid undercooked meat, especially poultry, pork, sausages, and burgers. Any meat you eat should be cooked thoroughly, should not be pink, or have any blood coming out of it.

    • It is safest to avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy as even a small amount of alcohol can affect your baby's mental development. However, cooking with alcohol, such as red wine in bolognese sauce, is safe as the cooking process removes the alcohol.

    • Raw fish, especially shellfish, can cause several infections. These can be viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections, such as norovirus, Vibrio, Salmonella, etc. Some of these infections may only affect you, causing dehydration and weakness. Other infections may be passed on to your baby with serious, or even fatal, consequences.

    • Eating processed foods during pregnancy can increase your risk of excess weight gain, gestational diabetes, and complications. This can have long-term health implications for you and your child.

    • Limit caffeine intake to under 200 mg per day, which is about 2 to 3 cups of coffee. High caffeine intake during pregnancy may hinder a baby's growth and cause low birth weight.

    • Pre-prepared or pre-packaged fruit or vegetable salads, including those from buffets and salad bars, have a higher risk of listeria contamination and should be avoided.

    • Women should not consume energy drinks during pregnancy as they may contain high levels of caffeine and other ingredients which are not recommended for pregnant women.

    • Women should keep cakes, biscuits, cookies, chips, and candy to a minimum. Many of these options are high in sugar and fat, have little nutritional content, and undermine a pregnant woman's efforts to maintain a healthy body weight.

Pregnancy can be a confusing time as everything is new to you. If you are not sure about the food items you want to eat or have cravings for, it is best to consult your doctor before consuming them.
